Would you mind giving us an insight into what your show/event/performance is?
CAMPITALISM is a TEDx Talk meets a drag brunch meets The Lehman Trilogy. It follows us, the BOYs, mutating into three awful finance bros from Canary Wharf, the Brians, on a quest to educate the woke mob about money and fix the economy once and for all.
Tell us about the creative team and the process involved?
We all met at an audition at which we all clocked each other’s obvious gayness and ambiguous pronouns. We knew we wanted to make a show together and some point. CAMPITALISM sprang from a moment when all three of us were in a period of financial uncertainty and attempting to navigate the systems around that. We realised how financially illiterate we really are and this show is an attempt to take back that power while also showing off our sumptuous thighs (awooga)
How does it feel coming to (back to) the Fringe?
We couldn’t be more excited to kick down the door of the Fringe and make our debut as a theatre company. It’s something that we’ve been working towards and dreaming of since we met back in 2023 and went for a pint at John the Unicorn in Peckham. We can’t wait for people to get to know us and to spread our unique brand of theatrical silliness (like a rash) all over the festival.
With shows from all over the world at the Fringe, what sets yours apart?
With the crowning of the world first Trillionaire and ongoing slide towards facism, the world seems to be taking pains to ensure people feel more and more powerless everyday. The show holds space for all the fear and uncertainty to be explored with honesty, humour and hope. We are not experts by any means but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a stake in the conversation and we want to empower others to feel the same. Also our sumptuous, sumptuous thighs set us apart from all the other shows (they’re really sumptuous guys, if you don’t believe us, buy a ticket)
On that, is there anything in the production or production team’s backgrounds which influences the way the show is performed or told?
We all come from different disciplines – Kit is mainly a playwright, Cherry a poet, Maria a comedian – and we weren’t sure at first how that would work. But what we did have was a shared sense of humour (dick jokes) and genuine love for theatre and each other. The production takes a lot from drag kings, alternative comedy, and non-traditional theatre (Shout out Silent Faces, you guys were a big inspiration).
Is there anything specific you’re hoping the audience will take away?
We hope you will all become six figure earners by the end of the hour (although we cannot legally guarantee that so please don’t asked the Pleasance for any refunds). If not, we hope we can empower our audience to challenge and question the status quo and start smashing the taboo around money.
Your Ideal audience is in attendance, who’s watching? Or more importantly – who isn’t…?
Both our dream and nightmare audience would Elon Musk as the only one in attendance – if we had him in a room for a hour maybe we could change his mind? This show was made for people like us, who felt not only left out of the financial conversation but like that world would always be completely inaccessible. If you’re worried about whether you’ll ever own a house, pay off your debts, and earn enough to just be comfortable, this show is for you.
It’s an intense month, so where you’re able, how do you plan to relax, and are there any other shows you intend to see or want to recommend?
We cannot wait to see ‘Roger Prick: Sexopolis’, ‘2 by 2’ by Nathaniel Jones, and ‘Aquarius Rising‘ by Ben Falacci as three shows that are made by honorary BOYs and feel spiritually siblings to CAMPITALISM. As for relaxing, there’s nothing that relaxes us BOYs more than a refreshing can of DASH water. We love this sparkling water infused with real wonky fruit as three wonky fruits ourselves.
