Lonely musical composer Randy Thatcher has finally found the confidence to share his magnum opus (to an imaginary audience in his bedroom). While performing his show about heartbreak, friendship and intergalactic warfare, Randy realises his life might not be so different from that of his show’s protagonist, Gazandy. Written and performed by Matt Haughey, the singer-songwriter with 10+ million streams. Randy, on the other hand, has never had anyone listen to his music besides his Mom, but he’s sure excited to give it a try! Directed by Travis Greisler.
Would you mind giving us a brief insight into what your show is?
Here’s a brief summary. “Lonely musical composer Randy Thatcher has finally found the confidence to share his magnum opus (to an imaginary audience in his bedroom). While performing his show about heartbreak, friendship and intergalactic warfare, Randy realises his life might not be so different from that of his show’s protagonist, Gazandy.”
I very much wrote this show about myself. I was, and still am, a very anxious kid who writes musicals in his bedroom. The main character in the show, Randy, has clearly written a musical about himself as well. The show explores the idea of how difficult it can be to share your work with the world. Making art is such a personal experience, so when people don’t like what you’ve made, it can almost feel like they don’t like you. That kinda sucks. Although it’s a one-man show, Randy interacts a lot with his mom via pre-recorded lines on “Facetime”. The relationship between Randy and his mom is very much the heart of the show.
Tell us about the creative team and the process involved?
I started writing this show a few years ago. Around 6 months ago, I shared an early draft with my two producers, Chris Crouch and Molly Morris. They got on board and connected me with the Pleasance Theater. They also connected me with the director for this show, Travis Greisler. In the past few months, Travis has been working with me also as a dramaturg. After 7 drafts, we’ve finally locked in the script and have started rehearsing! We’re also working with Nicky Bunch as the set designer and Jamie Platt as a lighting designer.
How does it feel coming to the Fringe?
At the risk of sounding corny, this is kind of a dream come true for me. I came to the Fringe as a spectator a few years ago and knew that one day I wanted to come back with my own show. The feeling in the city is truly unlike anything I’ve ever felt. I’m really just happy to be a part of the greatest month in any city in the world.
There are over 3,000 shows at the Fringe. So, what sets your show apart?
I think my music is what sets this show apart. I’ve been releasing music for years and have toured around the United States. My favourite thing to do in the world is performing for a room full of people, and I also think it’s what I’m best at. If people are curious about the show, they can find my music on Spotify and all other streaming platforms under “Matt Haughey“. A few of the songs in the show are actually songs I’ve already released.
Is there anything specific you’re hoping the audience will take away?
For one, I hope the audience has a great time and leaves with a song or two stuck in their heads. Also, I hope the audience sees just how isolating and vulnerable sharing work can feel sometimes. Also, I hope they laugh and cry and whatnot.
Your ideal audience is in attendance, who’s watching? Or more importantly – who isn’t there…
Honestly, my music tends to do quite well with Moms. I’ve had countless people message me or come up to me over the years and say “Hey man, my Mom really loves your music.” Not sure why this is the case but I can’t complain. Moms are great! Other than that, I’m excited to perform to any and everyone! Although I’d rather none of my childhood bullies come. That would be a real bummer.
It’s an intense month, so where you’re able, how do you plan to relax, and are there any other shows you intend to see or want to recommend?
I plan on seeing as many shows as I can! I’m excited to see a show called “Half Man Half Bull“, but other than that I’m just excited to hear about shows when I get there. I love playing golf so I might try to get out and play a few holes on one of my off days. Other than that, I’m excited to just wander around the city. Wandering has always been one of my favourite ways to relax.
In your ideal world, how can we improve the Fringe, of performance, and the industry?
To be fair, I’ve never been to the Fringe as a performer before so I’m not quite sure I have any suggestions. Perhaps I’ll have a few ideas come the end of August, but for now I’m just excited to get to Edinburgh and start performing!
