George found himself falling head over heels for Alice, straight down a rabbit hole of fantasy and delusion. Strap in for a brand-new hour from Greek Comedian, George Zacharopoulos as he explores his journey through a turbulent relationship in an hour of head-spinning and hilarious stand-up.
Would you mind giving us a brief insight into what your show is?
Hello. I am George Zacharopoulos, a half-deaf comedian born and raised in Greece who came to the UK to do a degree in Biochemistry and even though his parents told him to focus on his studies it fell on deaf ear. I am a headliner all over the UK, Europe and Australia, with sold-out shows in every festival I have participated. This show is called Wonderland and at its heart, it is the story of falling in love with a girl called Alice. It is a 100% true story with a huge twist I can’t reveal, but it has been three years and my friends still talk about it. It is surprising, dark, really funny, poignant and ultimately uplifting.
Tell us about the creative team and process involved?
With it being a true story, it kinda wrote itself. I just had to make it funny and also go through 20 hours of therapy! I have done about 100 previews already so I’m confident this show is good to go.
How does it feel coming to the Fringe?
I love the Fringe, Absolutely love it. I do so many gigs a day and I hang out with my best friends. One goes through the entire range of emotions and it is the highlight of my year!
There are over 3,000 shows at the Fringe. So, what sets your show apart?
The story is really powerful, which is why I have taken it to the Pleasance Dome this year. It is a really striking story and it is told by a comedian who is 8 festival hours deep and headlines all over the world. It is unbecoming to blow your own trumpet in the UK, but I am at the top of my game and the story I am saying is outrageous.
Is there anything specific you’re hoping the audience will take away?
Yes, I hope everyone walks out feeling better about past relationships and hopefully about themselves.
Your ideal audience is in attendance, who’s watching? Or more importantly – who isn’t there…
Well, last year someone shouted at me to go back where I came from and I would have to say less of that please. Other than that, everyone is welcome, absolutely everyone. I would love it if “the gatekeepers” came along, but I have built a pretty loyal following and I hope they come again!
It’s an intense month, so where you’re able, how do you plan to relax, and are there any other shows you intend to see or want to recommend?
I am planning to watch Amos Gill, Kate Lucas, Andre De Freitas, Luisa Omielan, Paul Currie and Larry Dean.
In your ideal world, how can we improve the world of the Fringe, of performance, and the industry?
Don’t pigeonhole people and take chances on complete unknowns.
