Award-winning lefty comedian and human rights advocate Sid Singh takes you on a hilarious journey as he figures out how to fight the good fight… as far from home as possible! The last year has had people asking Sid to choose between his human rights work and comedy.
Would you mind giving us a brief insight into what your show is?
Sure! My name is Sid Singh and I am a professional comedian who volunteers as a human rights lawyer! My show is the story of how I got to help beat Donald Trump’s administration in court to save 70,000 refugees… by accident! It involves moving across the country, accidentally getting into law school, becoming homeless, moving to London, touring India, and so much more!
Tell us about the creative team and process involved?
I’m all by myself! I make my money now touring Europe and selling tickets to other progressive-minded people who want to fight the good fight. It can be tough travelling from city to city often sleeping on couches so as to raise more money for the legal aid of refugees. I’m broke and my back hurts. But so far so good anyway!
How does it feel coming to the Fringe?
The fringe is the greatest festival in the world! I will go every year they let me.
There are over 3,000 shows at the Fringe. So, what sets your show apart?
I take pride in being the only show that gets conservatives and progressives to donate significant money to a cause that saves lives (I split my bucket 50/50 with the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies) while also making both sides laugh. I’m not for everyone, but despite being a political comedian, I’m for more people than I ever thought possible.
Come laugh and join us!
Is there anything specific you’re hoping the audience will take away?
How little is required to create change.
You don’t need to be a hero. I’m sure as hell, not a hero. But if I can make you laugh and you can donate after the show, we can give that money to heroes and they can change lives.
Your ideal audience is in attendance, who’s watching? Or more importantly – who isn’t there…
I’ve been a comedian for almost 15 years. Anyone with an open mind is welcome. I truly believe I can make anyone laugh. And if you dare heckle me, after 15 years, I can put anyone down too.
It’s an intense month, so where you’re able, how do you plan to relax, and are there any other shows you intend to see or want to recommend?
So many amazing comedians!! Go watch Luana Matei from Romania! Go watch Kat Nip from Poland! George Zacharopoulos from Greece! Sam See from Singapore! Ram Arrangi from India! Jamie Allerton from York! Mike Rice from North Korea! They’re all so wonderful!
In your ideal world, how can we improve the world of the Fringe, of performance, and the industry?
If you don’t relate to a comedian, ask yourself why. Too many female-identifying comedians of colour don’t get the credit they deserve because there are not enough female-identifying industry execs of colour. That doesn’t mean it isn’t getting better, it is! But too often, we don’t ask ourselves why we didn’t like a comedian. Sometimes, it has nothing to do with them, and the industry would be wise to remember that!
