Belly Laugh at Underbelly, Cowgate

Hi Jill! It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year since the last party. Jill’s Tupperware Party is an interactive and fully immersive party in a strange musty bunker on Cowgate. Before the show begins the audience is greeted by Jill (Ricky Hunt) and her supervisor and head tupperware seller of last year, Jill (Coral Bevan), and given a nametag where everyone inevitably takes on the persona of, you guessed it, Jill. 

The show itself is a wild romp of the least human embrace of humanity one could imagine. It pushes boundaries, explores modern social norms and immediately bins them, and somehow maintains a sense of wonder and control despite a full need to have the show pushed forward by the audience themselves. 

If there is one critique of the show, it would be that the show is advertised as a comedy horror, and while comedy is entirely accurate, horror is less so. The show manages to use a human sense of unease and the fear of silliness to its advantage, but by the end of the show it is almost guaranteed that everyone is sold on the concept and fully indoctrinated into the pyramid scheme of tupperware sales and Jill’s friend group.

It is clear that Jill’s Tupperware Party has found success, as it is about to receive a west end transfer, but the most important piece of the show is that the audience goes into it without an idea of what to expect. The show brilliantly plays into community building, herd mentality, and trust that an audience will inevitably mold themselves to their best selves to enjoy this show. Hunt and Bevan manage to constantly shock, excite, and intrigue audiences. The entire experience brings hilarity and absurdity to the Fringe, leaving it in the hands of the wild and crazy audience members who dare to buy a ticket. With that said, if you are brave enough to trust this process, it is well worth it to go to Jill’s Tupperware Party.
