Have a Gander at A History of Paper: A Scottish Hit Heads to New York with Alan Cumming and Shirley Henderson

Scottish theatre takes another triumphant leap onto the international stage as the exquisite chamber musical A History of Paper confirms a 13-week Off-Broadway engagement for early 2027.

Jointly mounted by Pitlochry Festival Theatre and Dundee Rep Theatre alongside producers Sonia Friedman Productions, Jerry Goehring, and Pemberley Productions, the production makes its US debut at the Shubert Organization’s Stage 42 (422 West 42nd Street) running from 12th February through 16th May 2027. Tickets go on sale on 17 November 2026.

The journey of A History of Paper stands as a testament to the patient, rewarding development of new Scottish writing. The piece first began life in 2017 as an original BBC Radio 4 drama authored by the late, greatly missed playwright Oliver Emanuel. Two years later in 2019, Emanuel teamed up with composer Gareth Williams to expand the drama into a work-in-progress musical during Dundee Rep’s Rep Stripped festival, testing the new material in front of live trial audiences.

By 2024, the fully realised production made its Edinburgh Festival Fringe debut at the Traverse Theatre, capturing critical acclaim and securing a prestigious Fringe First Award. Building on that momentum, the show enjoyed a sold-out summer season at Pitlochry Festival Theatre in Highland Perthshire, paving the way for its upcoming 2027 New York run—marking the historic first time a production originating from either Pitlochry or Dundee Rep has transferred Off-Broadway.

At its heart, A History of Paper is a two-person musical exploring how a lifetime of intimacy can be mapped through modest, everyday ephemera. The plot follows two Edinburgh tenement neighbours—simply known as He and She—whose initial interaction begins over a noise complaint written on a postcard.

As their relationship deepens, their shared narrative unfolds through a cardboard box filled with physical keepsakes: receipts, train tickets, scribbled menus, handwritten letters, and origami gifts. Williams’s delicate musical score, performed live alongside, underscores a narrative that balances lighthearted, wry banter with a quiet, devastating emotional depth.

Central to the revival’s success will be the magnetic dynamic between its two co-stars, whose long-standing real-life friendship translates into seamless onstage chemistry.

Making her long-awaited New York stage debut, Olivier Award-winner Shirley Henderson (Girl from the North Country, Harry Potter, Bridget Jones, Happy Valley) brings an airy, playful, and sharp-witted counterweight to the piece. Henderson captures the warmth and subtle sarcasm of She with characteristic nuance, grounding the show’s vocal moments with quiet vulnerability. Reflecting on the upcoming transfer, Henderson shared:

“When Alan whispered backstage to me that we might be taking our show A History of Paper to New York, my heart skipped a beat. In that moment, I felt excited, a little scared but happy to be holding hands with Alan as we take this beautiful piece of writing with sweet music on the next part of its journey. I never imagined it was possible to have the opportunity to step onto the New York stage. I am glad it’s with my lovely friend Alan Cumming.”

Sharing the stage as He is Tony, Emmy, BAFTA, and Olivier Award-winner Alan Cumming, taking on his first headline acting performance since assuming the role of Artistic Director at Pitlochry Festival Theatre. Returning to the city where he famously starred in Cabaret and Macbeth, Cumming noted the significance of establishing a direct pipeline between Scotland and Manhattan:

“I am so thrilled to bring A History of Paper from my home country of Scotland to my adopted home in New York City. This is one of these rare shows that transcends its own story and manages to touch an audience in a really visceral and beautiful way… Since taking over as Artistic Director at Pitlochry Festival Theatre it has been my plan (and dream) to start a theatrical exchange channel between Manhattan and our theatre in the hills.”

The View from Pitlochry & Looking Ahead

When we reviewed the production during its run in Pitlochry, our editor praised the show as a “gorgeous testament to the lasting power of human touch”—highlighting how its delicate storytelling transforms ordinary ephemera into an emotionally charged portrait of connection and memory.

Director Andrew Panton views the Off-Broadway transfer as a crucial championing of regional Scottish theatre on the global stage:

“A History of Paper is the story of one relationship quietly becoming about all of us: the people who shape our lives, the memories we hold on to, and the ordinary moments we come to treasure most. To see work developed at Dundee Rep reach international audiences is a powerful reminder of why we invest in new work and the artists who create it.”
