Produced by Degrees of Error
The sell-out show, Murder, She Didn’t Write, from Degrees of Error, triumphantly returns to the Fringe Festival with plot twists that even the cast couldn’t possibly predict.
The one-act improvised comedy centres around a classic whodunnit, with both the murdered and murderer selected by an audience member. The unpredictability of the audience suggestions for plot points and setting, as well as the on-stage improvisation of the talented cast ensure that everyone is on the edge of their seats.
Bookending the story, Stephen Clement’s Detective ensures that the audience is engrossed right from the outset, and ties up the story in the finale. Making Clement’s task as challenging as possible are the other cast members, who succeed in taking a Scotland vs France Rugby Game setting with a Bisto gravy murder weapon to a new level of ridiculousness, with questionable accents, toilet humour and too many affair storylines to count.
Where Degrees of Error succeeds is in their reliable sound and lighting triggers that prompt scene changes, flashbacks and cast rotations, preventing the improvised dialogue from veering too far from the main plot.
The set, an old-fashioned drawing room, is reminiscent of Agatha Christie productions but can be challenging for the cast to incorporate into the audience-selected setting. Sara Garrard accompanies the cast on their journey with musical interludes, the highlight of which had to be the improvised song “We all love rugby”.
