Presented by Underbelly and Les Foutoukours

McEwan Hall at Underbelly, Bristo Square
Sometimes, you just need to breathe. Particularly if it’s amid the high-octane frenzy and relentless clamour of the Edinburgh Fringe, Québécois company Les Foutoukours delivers an enchanting antidote with Glob. Pinned against the expansive backdrop of McEwan Hall, this physical theatre marvel strips away dialogue, choosing instead to craft a universal, dreamlike language out of pure movement, subtle vocalisations, and profound emotional intelligence. In a time when media for children can vary from over-stimulating to docile, Glob is a timeless, gorgeous piece.
The narrative introduces two nameless, spherical, snow-white creatures – resembling sentient marshmallows adorned with classic crimson noses – who awaken in an abstract, wintry wonderland. What ensues is an exquisitely paced exploration of curiosity, hesitation, and genuine friendship. Rather than rushing between set pieces, the duo dares to embrace stillness. They allow the narrative space to breathe, transforming simple interactions with giant glowing spheres or a towering freestanding ladder into captivating theatrical milestones.
Underneath the gentle, accessible facade lies an absolute masterclass in technical circus discipline. The sheer physical control required to execute high-level acrobatics, fluid tap-dancing sequences, and intricate diabolo manipulation while encased in bulky, padded costumes is staggering. One performer’s aerial-style solo atop an unsecured ladder stands out as a genuine showstopper, eliciting collective gasps from the auditorium through its sublime blend of peril and grace.
What truly sets Glob apart is its extraordinary responsiveness to the room. The performers navigate stray audience noises or unexpected interruptions with brilliant, in-character improvisations, weaving real-world distractions seamlessly into the performance. It is this level of intuitive stagecraft that keeps both toddlers and seasoned critics completely spellbound.
By placing tenderness, patience, and non-verbal intimacy at the forefront, Les Foutoukours has fashioned a transcendent piece of physical comedy. Glob is a joyful, visually stunning, and deeply restorative triumph that bridges generational divides with effortless artistic elegance
