Review: Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2024 – The Hidden Garden

Produced by JC Movement Production / Jill Crovisier / Luxembourg Selection

Review by Jack Quinn

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Jill Crovisier’s performance in The Hidden Garden demonstrates a high level of technical skill and meticulous attention to detail. Her portrayal of the garden, with its subtle interactions and rich symbolism, reflects a deep commitment to a multidisciplinary approach of movement, dance theatre, and lyrical. Crovisier thoughtfully integrates cultural, social, and political elements into her choreography, resulting in a visually compelling and conceptually rich piece.

While the performance excels in its technical execution, there is room for further development in terms of narrative cohesion. The piece is composed of distinct and well-defined sections, each offering unique insights and symbolic gestures. However, the connections between these segments could be more clearly articulated to enhance the overall narrative flow. The symbolism, though engaging, occasionally feels pretentiously abstract, leaving the audience to navigate the meaning without sufficient narrative guidance.

Crovisier’s choreography is both innovative and thought-provoking, inviting the audience to engage with the performance on an intellectual level. However, a more pronounced emotional narrative could further deepen the audience’s connection to the work. The exploration of universal themes and the interaction with the performance space are commendable, though a stronger narrative thread might help unify these elements.

The Hidden Garden is a technically accomplished performance that offers many intriguing ideas and visual elements. There is potential for further narrative refinement, which could elevate the work and create a more resonant experience for the audience. Crovisier’s talent is clear, and with continued exploration of narrative development, her work will undoubtedly continue to impress.
