Ruby McCollister: Tragedy – Underbelly: Belly Dancer

Performed by Ruby McColliste

Review by Christian Maddock

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Tragedy is an often-covered theme in theatre, and it is complicated to find a unique spin on the most ancient form of drama. However, to focus on the topic of tragedy itself, namely the cult of tragic women in the media, is far more interesting to delve into. In ‘Tragedy’, Ruby McCollister does just that and then some.

The show follows McCollister’s lifelong fixation with becoming a tragic figure. From Edie Sedgwick to Marilyn Monroe, each fixation is examined with a notable level of flare. The show consists of comedic speeches and singing, with the accompaniment of a slideshow to add visual intrigue. Audiences can look forward to the particularly strong routine/story about a French college boyfriend.

The show was captivating (at times), though it suffers from its own whirlwind of energy. Each line is delivered by McCollister in its own special, often manic, way – to the extent that the narrative of each tale occasionally gets lost within vocal experimentation.

To those obsessed with tragedy and dream of doom, looking for a compelling storyteller with large-scale, often ghastly stories, this show ticks many boxes.
